Year 1 Spring term 2021 

Our topic this half term is 'Africa'. 

Each day there will be a live zoom lesson, one for English and one for Maths.

We are combining Y1/2 lessons together as they are part of Key Stage 1. 

Please find below an overview of the related activities that your child can do.  We have differentiated and created 4 tasks, starting with simple steps, leading up to more of a challenge.  These are applicable for children in Y1 and Y2. If you need more guidance about where to aim the tasks for your child, please contact your class teacher via dojo.

What is a verb?

Can you think of verbs to describe how the animals might be moving e.g. galloping, running, walking, jumping.

  • To use a verb to describe how the animals might be moving.

  • To write sentences with a verb and adjective in e.g. The stripy zebra galloped towards the round juicy orange.

Monday 18.1.21 Maths - To name 2D shapes

*Name simple 2D shapes (square, circle, triangle and rectangle). Name the objects they have found.

Maths Thursday 21st January 2021

To identify lines of symmetry

* Use the 2D shape mat and with your finger show an adult where a line of symmetry could be on each shape.
** Use the 2D shape mat to draw your shape (using a ruler and very carefully as if you don’t this may affect the symmetry) and find 1 line of symmetry on each shape

This term we are learning all about explorers. In Year 1 and Year 2 we are going to be learning about an explorer called ‘David Livingstone’.

Kenya

As many of you discovered last week in your research, Africa is a continent and made up of 54 countries.  We are going to focus on Kenya. 

Task- Do some research about Kenya.

Where is it in Africa? What is the weather like there? How many people live there? What animals might you see? What tourist attractions are there in Kenya? How does it compare to the UK?

You could make a fact file. You could use a word document to type your findings. You could draw pictures of Kenya.

Science

This week we are looking at sorting animals into groups of mammals, birds, fish, reptiles or amphibians. Read the sentences below, then you can write the titles 'mammal, bird, fish etc' onto a piece or paper and sort the animals into the correct headings (or you can print the sheets off if you have access to a printer.) You could then think about the animals in our Handa's surprise story and sort them into the correct category too! 

 

Mammal – Mammals are animals that breathe air, grow hair or fur an fee on their mother’s milk as a baby.

Bird – Birds have a beak, two legs, feathers and wings.

Fish – Fish live and breathe under water. They have scaly skin, fins to help them swim and they breathe through gills.

Reptile – All reptiles breathe air. They have scales on their skin.

Amphibian – Amphibians live in the water as babies and on land as they grow older. They have smooth, slimy skin.

Reading

Make sure you have dedicated reading time each day.  This can be an appropriate book they can read themselves, read a story to them and talk about it, use the sounds and words learnt in phonics to read words and sentences or answer questions about this week’s text. There are also ebooks available to read on Oxford Owl.

Phonics

Children are grouped in school for phonics, so if you are not sure where your child is up to or what they should be learning, please get in touch.

Y1 children were all given their relevant sound mat recently to take home to practice.  All sound mats are attached here too.

phonicsplay.co.uk are giving free access again to their website.  We use this in school so the children will be familiar with the games and resources.

If you want other online links we sometimes use Mr Thorne does phonics in school.  You can search ‘Mr Thorne’ and the phase/sound you want.

Another good fun one is ‘Mr Mc’.  He is from Northern Ireland so does have an accent but his activities are fun and engaging.

Each phase has a set of tricky words to read.  They usually read them first and then learn to spell them later on.

High frequency words are words that the children will come across regularly in their reading.  If there are HFW in their phase then they will be based on the letters they have learned and will be able to sound them out.  Encourage the children to read and recognise these words. If they know it, they don’t need to sound it out.

Topic 

Lesson 1 Geography 

Use the story Handa's Surprise to help. Find Africa on a map/globe.  Can you discuss the similarities and differences between Africa and England.  What do you think it is like in Africa? How can we find out? What is it like in Dukinfield? 

 

Lesson 2  Science 

Can you research an African animal and write 3 facts about that animal. 

 

Lesson 3 Geography 

Can you find out: 

  • What the landscape is like in Africa (grasslands/desert/rain forest) and where they are on a map. 
  • What the climate is like
  • About the seasons and how they are different to ours. 

Lesson 4 Art 

Can you look at the picture of African designs. Can you design your own pattern.
