Reading expectations

When we report your child's achievement level in Autumn, Spring and Summer we refer to working TOWARDS the expected standard, working AT the expected standard, working ABOVE the expected standard. Shown below is what constitutes the expected standard in each year group in writing. Remember, this is the expectation for the end of the year.

These checklists are what teachers use to assess children's reading several times throughout the year. They have been included here in more child friendly language so you can talk to your child about their reading. Children are used to talking about their reading using these grammatical terms and this vocabulary. Checklists like these are used in collaboration with phonic assessments, benchmarking and reading assessments throughout the school year.
